Phoenix Lander Returns Color Image Data
A look at the Martian Arctic region
Page Link:
Early color image data has been returned from Phoenix, which safely landed on Mars on the 25th of May, 2008.  Here is a look at the library DVD that was carried to Mars on the lander.  Also we can see the true color of the soil and get an idea of how dark the region truly is.
This image was constructed from the Right SSI camera filters for red, green, and blue.  Notice the weak green color and the darkness of the flag.  This is due to the peak color of those items not matching the peak wavelengths of the filters.

The terrain is visually a hybrid of what we see in Gusev Crater, with the scattering of rocks, and the polygons that we see in Meridiani Planum.  To see a full-sized view, click on the image at the left.

The image data comes from the second sol of the mission and is from files lg_532, lg_533, and lg_534.  The web address for the data is here.
